About

Barney Thomas Daniel writes about his father and his childhood memories of the Daniel family. He covers what had been told to him and what he observed about his father.

Additional notes, dates, pictures and historical information have been added by Gregory Paul Skinner, Captain Daniel’s great grandson, these have been taken from research compiled over the last five years.

Original documents have been included from the Barney Daniel and Patrick Skinner Collections, as well as local papers and genealogy searches.

Unfortunately Barney did not live to see his works published, but intrusted his nephew, Patrick Skinner, to see that his words would make print, this is one of the planned published works.

Captain Daniel – Deck Boy, Sailor, Signalman, Home Trade Mate and Master, Shanghai, Captain, Master Mariner, Fisheries Inspector, House Shifter, Marine Biologist, Father and Husband.

Born Charles Bamford Daniel in London, England in 1883 he immigrated to New Zealand with his parents and siblings aged only 8 months. They settled in Devonport on the Shore in Auckland.

Starting work from the early age of 13, Charles experienced a wide range of vocations, all of which revolved around the sea.

The writing of this book has been part of a larger journal undertaken by Captain Daniel’s eldest son Barney Daniel, also of a maritime background, wharf builder, ship wright, ship owner, master and owner of the old scow “Success”.

Hi there, thank you for recording this valuable slice of history. I live in the house at 27 Roslyn Terrace, Devonport, which we believe was built by Fred Gladding and his wife Elsie (nee Daniel). As part of an old Devonport family (Shaw, on my Mum’s side), it has been wonderful to discover Fred and Elsie (who my grandmother may have known), and such interesting stories as Fred’s part in the establishment of Rugby League in Auckland. Thanks again and regards, Chris Newey.

Hi Lex – possibly we might have some documents – I would have to look through Barney’s boxes. Barney did write a book about his life called A Kiwi Journal, but a quick check of that has no mention of Manson
